Open Call for Assistant or Associate Professor (Deadline: May 1st)

Position Title: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, one person

Work Location: Biology and Life Sciences Division, Research Institute for Electronic Science (RIES), Hokkaido University 

​

Job Description: Research and education on the development of advanced optical and information technologies for life sciences and their applications in Prof. Hideharu Mikami’s group.

 

Qualification:

1. Holding or being expected to hold a Ph.D. or doctoral degree.

2. Having expertise in one or more of the following fields: optics, informatics, and life science.

3. Being highly motivated to engage in the development of optics–informatics fusion technologies that integrate optical techniques such as fluorescence microscopy and optogenetics with information technologies including AI, as well as in applying these technologies to biological samples such as model organisms (e.g., mice, C. elegans) and living cells. (However, prior experience in these research areas is not required.)

4. Being able to carry out research in collaboration with researchers within and outside the research group.

 

For example, we assume, but do not require, that candidates have experience in the following types of research.

• Research in the field of optics, such as optical microscopy, spectroscopy, and computational imaging.

• The development of data analysis methods for biological images, neural activity data, etc.

• Research using advanced optical imaging techniques (e.g., fluorescence microscopy) in any field of life science such as neuroscience, developmental biology, and cell biology.

 

Expected Start Date: August 1st, 2026, or later.

 

Employment Status:

Associate Professor: Tenured, but it is highly desired to be promoted within ten years.

Assistant Professor: The employment period cannot exceed 5 years from the initial date of hire (Reappointment for 3 years is possible depending on the results of an interim evaluation).
